Sliding Gate Problems & Fixes: Don’t Overlook the Chain

One of the most common—and most overlooked—issues with sliding automatic gates is the chain system.

The #1 Problem: Improper Chain Tension

The chain plays a critical role in how your gate operates. If it’s not properly maintained, it can lead to poor performance and even damage your operator.

Key things to know:

  • The chain should not sag more than 3 inches

  • A chain can typically be shortened only once

  • Over-tightening or excessive slack can both cause problems

What Happens When the Chain Is Not Maintained?

If the chain becomes too loose or too tight, you may notice:

  • Jerky or uneven gate movement

  • Excess strain on the motor and gearbox

  • Premature wear on sprockets and components

  • Increased risk of chain failure

Professional Recommendation

A properly adjusted chain should move smoothly with minimal slack. Regular inspection and adjustment are essential to keep your gate running safely and efficiently.

If you notice your gate is not moving cleanly or the chain appears loose, it’s best to have it serviced before it leads to more costly repairs.

Pro Tip:Watch your gate as it opens and closes. A smooth, consistent motion is a good sign your system is properly adjusted. Any hesitation, noise, or jerking is a sign it’s time for service.
