“Why Your Automatic Gate Won’t Close

When your automatic gate won’t close, it becomes more than an inconvenience — it’s a security issue. At Kelly Automatic Gates, we service homes and communities across Sarasota, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and all Gulf Coast areas, and we see the same issues over and over.
Here are the top causes and what you can check before calling for service:
1. Safety Sensors Are Blocked or Dirty
Gate safety eyes must “see” each other. If they’re dirty, full of spider webs, or misaligned, the gate will not close.
Quick fix:Clean the lenses and make sure both sensors point straight.
2. Low or Dead Gate Batteries

Most residential gate operators (LiftMaster, Viking, US Automatic, etc.) rely on 12-24V backup batteries.
Signs:
Gate opens but won’t close
Clicking, beeping, or slow movement
3. Track or Hinge Obstructions
Sliding gates: rocks, debris, or a bent sectionSwing gates: rusty hinges or binding arms
4. Board or Motor Overheating
In the Florida heat, motors shut down to protect themselves — especially on older LiftMaster and Viking units.
